Starbucks Introduces New Policy: Purchase Required to Use Facilities
Starbucks has announced a policy change requiring patrons in its North American stores to make a purchase to use its facilities, including restrooms, cafes, and patios. This update reverses the 2018 policy that allowed non-paying individuals to access restrooms, implemented after the controversial arrest of two Black men in a Philadelphia store.
The company said the new policy is designed to make all customers feel welcome and comfortable. To prepare for this change, Starbucks plans to provide three hours of training to staff before the policy takes effect on January 27, 2025, across its more than 11,000 North American locations.
This decision comes as Starbucks faces declining global sales and profits. In October, the company reported these downturns and announced plans to simplify its menu to offer more affordable options, aiming to attract customers back to its 36,000 outlets worldwide.
The 2018 policy was introduced after the Philadelphia incident, which caused a lot of criticism and made Starbucks conduct racial sensitivity training in all its stores.
Starbucks will be monitoring the impact of the new policy on customer experience and store operations, striving to balance inclusivity with the need to maintain a welcoming environment for paying customers.
